Does a recession equal gloom and doom for your salon?
I have been in the beauty biz for over twenty years. I have seen economic changes and challenges. But I have to say that salons seem to be less impacted by the slight ups and downs of the nation’s financial markets than many other industries.
While I was getting a peel this morning, I was talking to my skin care specialist about how spa services, seen as an indulgent “extra,” might be something that a struggling family would have to strike from their budget.
Hair, however, is less likely to suffer that fate. You may find that clients stretch their visits a week or two longer (keeping them pre-booked cuts down on a lot of that) or they might purchase fewer retail products; but hair continues to grow.
If you are still feeling a little scared, read this article from Small Business Trends about small business and recessions in general and how you can take steps to keep things going in tough times.
Remember: a salon is more likely to close due to bad management than a bad economy.
